The Power of Portrayal is a podcast aimed at shining a light on the current landscape of Australian media. It was inspired by the report 'Who Gets To Tell Australian Stories 2.0', released by Media Diversity Australia, that highlights the issue of ethnic diversity in news media. We wanted to know more about diversity in Australian media. How were differing religions represented? Differing genders and sexual orientations? What about people with disabilities, or those from different socioeconomic statuses?
And so... The Power of Portrayal was born.
In this series we dive into the nitty gritty of what representation is, what it's for, and why we need much more of it on our screens. We discuss the issues and impacts of negative, or a lack of representation as well as celebrate some triumphs in positive and accurate representation. We want to create the space for casual, but informative discussions that will encourage you to think more critically about the media you consume, and help us continue to carry Australian media into the future.
